To grow oat grass as shown above - you’ll need Potting Soil. Not topsoil. Talk to the nursery personal and tell them you want a potting soil that contains a blend of pure organic materials, plus the natural and traditional fertilizer plants need. Preferable a ready-to-use, enriched potting soil that is both pH balanced (between 5.5 and 6.5), guaranteed to be weed and pest free, and no fertilizing is required for up to 90 days after planting. Print this page and take this information with you.

The brand we use is called Supersoil® – Potting Soil. Not sure if this product is available in your area –go to their website. www.supersoil.com  click on Where To Buy.  Be sure to click your BACK button to return to this page.

If you can’t buy Supersoil® – Potting Soil in your area - Look for potting soil that contains the ingredients listed – or any potting soil that’s closest to the list of ingredients below – your nursery personal will help you – or just ask them for a potting soil used for growing vegetables from seeds.

* Canadian sphagnum peat moss, ground fir bark, high-quality compost, and fresh, clean sand combine to keep soil aerated and facilitate proper drainage.
* Nitrogen for helping plants grow and stay green. There's quick-release nitrogen that goes to work fast. And slow-release to keep feeding for up to 90 days.
* Phosphorus to establish strong root systems while stimulating flower, fruit, and vegetable growth.
* Potash to increase resistance to diseases and cold temperatures. Contributes to overall plant vigor.
* Iron for the prevention of chlorosis (yellowing leaves).

Please understand - no matter what potting soil you use - an (indoor oat grass growing period) is only about 2 weeks in total - when the oat grass (tips or ends) turn yellow the grass is no longer fresh. Remember that cats prefer to eat oat grass blades that are sprouting 3-5 inches in height. That’s why we plant a new small 4-inch round pot of natural oat grass once a week to assure our cat always has a fresh supply of new growth.  Oh, by the way, cropping the grass (cutting it back) is not recommended – it makes it tough and cats don’t like it.

We have tried a lot of different potting soils and have experienced good to excellent results using them. The potting soils that didn’t do so well where usually cheap in cost – we found you get what you pay for. So if you can’t get Supersoil® – Potting Soil - then a good rule of thumb is to purchase a potting soil that’s formulated for growing vegetables – you might want to buy a smaller bag to see if you like it.
